Financial Regulation
Regulatory filing system: 40,000 automatic checks per filing
- Client
- A financial services regulator (name withheld)
- Sector
- Financial Regulation, Insurance, Compliance
- Scale
- ~40,000 validation rules per filing
A financial services regulator collected its annual insurance filings through a fragile, macro-heavy Excel workbook that had to be checked by hand for errors and tampering. We replaced it with a secure system that regenerates a clean template, spots any tampering automatically, and runs around 40,000 checks on every filing, so reviewers get a clear report instead of combing through spreadsheets.

The challenge
The client, a financial services regulator, collected its annual insurance filings from registrants through a single, macro-heavy Excel workbook. It was fragile and hard to trust: the formulas could be edited, the protection on the sheets was weak, and sensitive details were embedded in the file itself. Every time a completed filing came back, someone had to confirm by hand that it had not been tampered with and that its thousands of figures added up. That was slow, and it left room for errors and changes to slip through unnoticed.
Our approach
We rebuilt the whole filing process into a secure, automated one.
- A clean, locked-down template. We built a tool that reads the regulator's master workbook and produces a clean version to send out to registrants, one without the fragile formulas and embedded details of the old file, while keeping a precise record of what every cell is meant to contain.
- Automatic tamper-checking. When a registrant returns a filing, the system compares it against that record to spot anything that has been changed or manipulated, so silent edits are caught rather than trusted.
- Around 40,000 checks on every filing. The system then runs roughly 40,000 validation rules across the submission, checking that the figures are consistent and correct, and records every result and every failure so reviewers can act on them and management can see the picture.
The result
Checking a filing is now automatic, repeatable and fully auditable. Tampering and silent formula changes that could once have slipped through are caught every time, the security weaknesses of the old spreadsheet are gone, and reviewers receive a clear, actionable report instead of combing through thousands of figures by hand.
